SERIES: TYLER: A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT A MAN WHO WON'T STAY IN HIS OWN YEAR
SERIES DESIGNATION: SERIES X
EPISODE: INTERLUDE, UNNUMBERED — "Recruitment Drive." An enrichment pass on
REDGARDEN/docs/BACKSTORY.md's gang-formation lore, per direct founder instruction: written as a
full episode rather than left as prose, and framed explicitly as the thing it's actually for — a
RED GARDEN in-game cutscene, not a broadcast episode. Treat every scene break below as a cut a
player would sit through between matches, not a commercial break.
LOCATION: Nine locations, none confirmed, all treated the way Series X always treats location:
approximately.
TIMELINE POSITION: Before the roster exists as a roster. This is the footage that explains why
it does.
BINDING STAGE AT OPEN: Not applicable.
BINDING STAGE AT CLOSE: Not applicable.
EMILY OS STATUS: CAST: STANDBY. Tyler file: 6 lines. Not addressed by this episode — this one
belongs to docs/BACKSTORY.md's custody logic, not the Emily OS layer.
SERIES X NOTE: In-fiction, this is a loading-screen artifact: the game shows you this instead
of a bare "UNLOCKED" toast, once, the first time you'd otherwise see nine strangers on a card
screen with no reason to be there together.
END LOG: PENDING
CONSISTENCY CHECK:
- Tyler does not complete a self-defining sentence
- The documentary is not called a ritual
- The Subscriber: not mentioned
- Chrono-Cube: not mentioned
- Emily OS: absent, correctly, per this episode's own note above
- Coin: flipped once, per usual, date withheld
- Matches
docs/BACKSTORY.mdexactly — same nine recruitments, same order, dramatized rather than summarized. Supersedes nothing; this is what that document already said, on screen.
UI OVERLAY — TOP OF FRAME, THIN, PRESENT THROUGHOUT RED GARDEN — ROSTER UNLOCK — "THE GANG"
SCENE ONE — THE FOLD
EXT. SOMEWHERE — SIX WEEKS, COMPRESSED TO FOUR SECONDS
A folded shape on a road shoulder. Tyler sits near it, not doing anything in particular. Six weeks
pass in a single unbroken shot — the light cycles, his position doesn't. On the seventh week the
shape unfolds. It's the Donkey. Neither of them reacts like six weeks is a strange amount of time
to have just happened.
DONKEY (TEXT CARD, no VO)
Sorry. Wasn't needed yet.
TYLER
I noticed.
SCENE TWO — GOVERNMENT WORK
INT. A FACTORY — CONTINUOUS FROM EXISTING FOOTAGE
*(this beat already exists on record — "The Duck Also Has Opinions About the Hoodie" — replayed
here at half-speed, folded into the recruitment montage rather than re-shot)*
The Duck, mid-declaration, telling a room full of strangers about its clearance level. Tyler,
off to the side, nodding once, like a man signing a form he already read.
TYLER (V.O., over the replay)
First one who ever believed it. Wasn't hard. I've met a coin that reads next February.
SCENE THREE — THE DIAGNOSTIC
INT. A GARAGE, CHROME EVERYWHERE — CONTINUOUS
The Unicorn runs a scanner over Tyler, head to foot. The readout: a single word, blinking,
INCONCLUSIVE. The Unicorn stares at it longer than the joke requires.
UNICORN (TEXT CARD)
That's not a result. That's a refusal to give me one.
TYLER
Some things don't resolve. Doesn't mean they're broken.
The Unicorn pockets the scanner instead of discarding it — the decision to keep running it, made
on camera, wordless.
SCENE FOUR — MID-PIANO
INT. A ROOM WITH A PIANO IN IT, FOR NO ESTABLISHED REASON — CONTINUOUS
The Ghost, playing. Tyler enters, doesn't announce himself, doesn't get announced to. The Ghost
doesn't stop playing. Four bars pass before either of them acknowledges the other, and the
acknowledgment is just proximity — Tyler sitting on the bench beside it, saying nothing, staying.
GHOST (TEXT CARD, mid-phrase)
I'm not really a ghost.
TYLER
I didn't ask.
GHOST (TEXT CARD)
Nobody ever does, until they do.
The piano continues under the scene change.
SCENE FIVE — THE SECRET, WITHHELD AGAIN
EXT. A ROADSIDE, DUSK — CONTINUOUS
The Frog, in its top hat, saying nothing about time travel, same as always. Tyler waits through
the entire silence and doesn't fill it with a question.
FROG (TEXT CARD)
You're the only one who's never asked.
TYLER
Didn't need to.
FROG (TEXT CARD, quieter)
That's the unsettling part.
SCENE SIX — UNTRANSLATED
EXT. WHEREVER THE TREE ALREADY WAS — CONTINUOUS, NO CAMERA MOVEMENT
The Tree. Static frame — the only static frame in this cutscene. It speaks one line, in French,
subtitled deliberately as [untranslated]. Tyler doesn't ask for a translation. The gang, per
BACKSTORY.md, never formally joined the Tree so much as formed around where it already stood —
this shot is the visual version of that fact: nothing moves toward it. The scene simply starts
including it.
SCENE SEVEN — THE SIDECAR
EXT. A PARKING LOT, SOMETHING SMOLDERING JUST OFF-FRAME — CONTINUOUS
The Pizza, on fire, exactly as advertised, exactly as never investigated. Tyler wheels a sidecar
into frame. The Pizza gets in. The sidecar does not catch. Nobody comments on this, on-screen or
off — per house rule, the situation is handling itself.
TYLER
Comfortable?
PIZZA (TEXT CARD)
I am the chosen one. This wasn't the fire talking either.
TYLER
Noted.
SCENE EIGHT — ALREADY WAITING
INT. WHEREVER THE GANG HAPPENS TO BE THAT WEEK — CONTINUOUS
No entrance. The Retrieval Cart is simply already there when the camera arrives, carrying
something nobody asked for. It does not greet Tyler. Tyler does not greet it. The gang, gathered
around it, treats the delivery itself as the only introduction that was ever going to happen.
TEXT CARD (no speaker — the Cart doesn't have lines)
DELIVERY LOGGED. NO REQUESTER ON FILE. AS USUAL.
SCENE NINE — LAST TO JOIN, FIRST TO BE TRUSTED
INT. A QUIET ROOM, SOMEONE VISIBLY WORSE OFF THAN THE REST — CONTINUOUS
Doc Wheel, working, not performing the work — patching whoever needed it this week, saying
nothing about it afterward. Tyler watches from the doorway. Doesn't help. Doesn't need to.
TYLER (V.O.)
Last one in. Nobody's voted on it, but if something actually went wrong, everybody already knows
who they'd want standing there.
TAG — THE RIDE
EXT. NINE RIDERS, ONE ROAD, NO FORMAL FORMATION — CONTINUOUS
All nine, however they each individually travel — folded, walking, on fire, simply present —
moving the same direction Tyler is. No one calls it a gang out loud. The UI overlay does it for
them.
UI OVERLAY, FULL SCREEN ROSTER UNLOCKED — "THE GANG" (9)
TYLER (V.O., last line, doesn't complete a sentence about himself, per standing rule)
I carry things until somebody else is standing where I'm not. Today that's nine somebodies.

LORE RECEIPT — CUSTODY LOG, UNNUMBERED ENTRY
Filed by: Eastwind Owl Field Archive, cross-filed with RED GARDEN's own asset log (first
entry of its kind — a cutscene, not a broadcast episode, carrying a Series X designation)
Classification: ROSTER ORIGIN, DRAMATIZED. Supersedes nothing in docs/BACKSTORY.md — same
nine recruitments, same order, same custody logic. This is that document on screen, not a rewrite
of it.
Object of record: The roster itself, post-formation. No single item this time — nine members,
recruited exactly as the prose account already said.
Eastwind note: this is the first Series X entry explicitly built to run inside a game client
rather than alongside one. The archive is treating that as a format change, not a canon change —
the custody logic underneath (Tyler carries, someone else eventually stands where he isn't) reads
identically whether it's delivered as found footage or as a loading-screen unlock.
Clean builds first.
Then custody.
Then everything else.
