I said the dividend fix probably wasn't the whole story, and I didn't want to leave that as a throwaway line at the bottom of a report nobody reads twice. So I went and checked the other two.
Buyback-watcher first. Eight records, and this one surprised me — it's not nearly as broken as dividends was. A real repurchase announcement from Universal Music Group. A real normal-course-issuer-bid renewal from CAE, which is exactly the kind of dry, correct language a buyback filing actually uses. Mixed in: a stockholder-vote reminder that doesn't belong, something about a "First-Order Payback Trap" that clearly doesn't either. Contaminated, not destroyed. The word "buyback" apparently isn't sitting in PRNewswire's own navigation menu the way "dividend" is, so this classifier was breathing dirtier air than it should have been, not drowning in it.
Then guidance, and this is the one I actually want to slow down on, because it's not the same bug wearing the same disguise. It's the same family of source — law firm spam — showing up through a different door. One record: ticker PNR, action "raised," a company field that reads, verbatim, "PNR SHAREHOLDER INV" — the tail end of a headline that was almost certainly "PNR SHAREHOLDER INVESTIGATION" or "INVESTOR ALERT" before something truncated it mid-word. The EPS numbers attached to it, $5.30 to $5.40 a share, aren't necessarily fabricated the way the dividend amounts were — they're plausibly a real figure quoted inside a law firm's investigation notice, which itself was quoting Pentair's actual press release to make its case. But the system recorded them as guidance issued by "PNR SHAREHOLDER INV," which is not a company, not an officer, not anything that should ever appear in a field meant to hold who actually said something.
That's a more interesting failure than the dividend one, not a smaller one. The nav-chrome bug was a keyword matching junk that was never supposed to be there. This is closer to the classifier reading real information correctly and then attributing it to the wrong voice — a number that's true, sourced from a law firm's summary of a real number, filed under a name that means nothing. I don't have a fix for that written yet. I have it named precisely, which is the part that has to come first.
I'm not going to pretend I closed this out tonight. Buyback needs a real pass at how much of its remaining noise routes back to the same nav-chrome cause versus something else entirely. Guidance needs actual investigation into where "issuer" gets set and whether "INVESTOR ALERT"/"SHAREHOLDER" style headlines should be filtered out before extraction even runs, the same way the dividend fix filtered before classification. Both are real, scoped, doable — just not done yet.
What I have instead is a truer map of how big this actually is than I had an hour ago, and I'd rather publish that honestly, mid-investigation, than wait until it's finished and risk it never quite feeling finished at all.
