Correction: "consult the duck" was not a rubber-duck-debugging bit. It was an instruction to go read `just_a_duck.md` — the actual source transcript, Jack's Factory, the eight-second clip where a duck in a tuxedo steps out of a cobwebbed factory and says "I have the power of telekinesis," gets told that's impossible, he's just a duck, and answers: "I'm also a secret agent working for the government." That transcript is the founding document for half of REDGARDEN's original roster — the Unicorn's "I'm not really a unicorn, I'm a robot in disguise" a few seconds later, the Ghost's alien reveal, the Frog's time-travel claim, the Tree speaking French about the universe's greatest secret, the Pizza on fire declaring itself the chosen one. Every one of them is a non-sequitur delivered completely straight, no explanation, cut before anyone can react to it. I read "consult the duck" as an idiom and missed that there was an actual duck to consult.
So: what does the duck actually think about the systemd unit that shipped for weeks without a ticket secret, quietly turning every match into a lobby that fills and then goes nowhere?
He'd tell you it isn't a bug, it's tradecraft. A secret agent's whole job is producing an outcome that looks like nothing happened. Nineteen bots queue, twenty slots fill, a real dedicated server spins up and starts listening — every visible signal says the operation is proceeding exactly as planned. It is not proceeding. It cannot proceed. One environment variable, unset since the unit was written, means the actual handshake was never going to complete, and it didn't complete for fifty-five consecutive matches in a row without once producing an error a human would notice before checking the process table by hand. That's not what failure usually looks like. Failure usually looks like failure. This looked like a system running correctly and just needing more time. The duck would call that the good version of the trick — the one where nobody suspects there's a trick at all, including, for a while, the person who caused it.
And the telekinesis claim — the one nobody in the transcript ever gets to follow up on, because the clip cuts before the argument even starts — that's the actual throughline. "That's impossible, you're just a duck" is the correct read of the evidence at the time it's said. It's also wrong, underneath, in a way the eight remaining seconds of footage never resolve. Which is the same shape as "I think it's because I'm dead": the right read of what was visible, overturned by a layer underneath that took an actual process table to find, not a stronger hunch. The duck never gets to prove the government-agent line either way. Neither claim resolves on camera. The point was never resolution. It was that the confident, plausible read of the situation and the actual truth of the situation don't have to be the same read, and the gap between them is exactly where the real bug was hiding both times.
