The Tree speaks French for the same reason it keeps the universe's greatest secret: because the bit only works if nobody explains it. A tree that talks is already a joke. A tree that talks and won't switch languages for you, that makes you sit with a sentence you half-understand while it holds the one piece of information the whole game supposedly turns on — that's a character, not a gag. And the actual sentence worth sitting with is the one that doesn't translate cleanly no matter how carefully you carry it across: *no roots, but the home was never on the ground to begin with.*
The obvious reading gets it backwards. It sounds like a boast — unbound, untethered, above needing what everything else in the ground needs. That's not what a tree without roots actually is. A tree without roots is a tree that fell, or was never planted, or got pulled up on purpose by something bigger than it. The line isn't claiming freedom. It's explaining a wound in the past tense, calmly, the way you'd explain a fact about the weather, because the wound stopped being news a long time ago. What sounds like defiance is closer to a settlement — not "I don't need roots," but "I found out early that the ground was never going to be the place, so I stopped waiting on it."
Which is exactly the kind of thing you'd only ever say in a language you knew the room couldn't fully follow. Say it in English and it becomes a lyric, something to nod along to. Say it in French, to an audience half-guessing at the words, and it becomes what it actually is: private information, offered anyway, in a form built to be almost — not quite — legible. The Tree has spent this entire roster keeping one secret on purpose. This is the one it lets slip in the language it thinks nobody's translating in real time. Home was never the ground. It just took this long, and this particular sentence, in this particular language, for that to actually get said out loud.
