*RED GARDEN — LOADING — "MID-PIANO PRESENTS." Transcript, unedited, as recorded on whatever was running in the garage that day.*
**TYLER:** We said we'd have people back once they committed to a bit for longer than it takes to say it. Today's guest has been wandering since before there was a garage to record in, so.
**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** Technically that's not a bit. That's just true.
**TYLER:** Cain. Thanks for coming.
**CAIN:** I was in the area.
**TYLER:** You're always in the area. That's the whole — that's your thing, right? The wandering.
**CAIN:** The wandering's the punishment. I didn't pick it as a personality.
**DUCK:** For legal reasons, I want it on record that I did not do anything to your brother.
**CAIN:** Nobody thought you did.
**DUCK:** I'm getting ahead of it.
**TYLER:** Okay, let's actually do this, because the lore document does something I want to ask you about directly. It calls the mark a curse and a mercy *at the same time.* Not curse-then- mercy. Not secretly-a-mercy. Both, simultaneously, and it says the text never resolves which one it actually is.
**CAIN:** It doesn't.
**TYLER:** That feels like a cop-out for a document to pull. "We're not going to tell you."
**CAIN:** It's not a cop-out. It's the only honest answer. You get cursed to wander with nothing — no home, no standing, everyone who hears the story knowing what you did before they know your name. And in the same breath, the exact same authority that did that to you says: and no one gets to kill you for it. That second part isn't separate from the first part. It's not an apology bolted on after. It's the same sentence.
**TYLER:** So which is it. Curse or mercy.
**CAIN:** Yes.
**TYLER:** That's not an answer.
**CAIN:** It's the only one that isn't a lie in one direction or the other.
**GARY:** Can I ask something. Not a bit. Actual question.
**TYLER:** Go.
**GARY:** You get marked so nobody kills you. Then you go build a city. Doesn't the mark make you memorable? Doesn't founding a city make you *more* memorable? Feels like a bad move for a guy whose whole thing is not wanting to be found.
**CAIN:** That's the part the document calls the single most understated line in the whole account. I didn't hide. I settled. Named it after my son. Nobody talks about that part as much as they talk about the murder, which — fair, honestly, it's the first one, it gets top billing forever — but the quieter fact is: a man who was told to wander forever stopped, on purpose, and built something that was going to outlast him. That's not hiding from the punishment. That's doing the thing the punishment said you'd never get to do, and doing it anyway, without asking permission, and without it counting as defiance either, because nobody ever told him to keep wandering *productively.*
**LOKI:** I respect that. Doing the thing quietly instead of making it a whole speech about doing the thing.
**CAIN:** I don't do speeches.
**LOKI:** You just gave one.
**CAIN:** That was different.
**LOKI:** Was it.
**TYLER:** Let's talk kit for a second, because I actually think the kit is doing something smart here. Your R doesn't stop you from taking damage. It stops you from *dying* from it. That's a real distinction the design's making, right? You're not invincible. You're just — unkillable for a window. Same as the mark.
**CAIN:** Same as the mark. You can still hit me. You can hit me as hard as you want. You just don't get to be the one who finishes it. That was never in your hands to begin with — it wasn't in the raven's hands, it wasn't in whoever finds me on the road's hands. Somebody already decided that part, a long time before you showed up.
**PIZZA:** That's kind of hot, not gonna lie.
**CAIN:** I wasn't going for that.
**PIZZA:** Doesn't mean it isn't.
**TYLER:** Last thing. Your W dashes you *away* from whoever you're fighting. Every other hero with a dash goes toward the fight. You go the other direction. On purpose.
**CAIN:** Cursed to wander. It's not a retreat, it's the whole condition, mechanically. I don't get to close distance and stay closed. The story doesn't let me plant a flag and stay there. I plant it, I found the city, and the text still has me leaving eventually, because that's what "cursed to wander" actually costs — not that I can't build things. That I don't get to keep standing next to them.
**TYLER:** That's — okay, that's genuinely the saddest thing anyone's said in this garage, and Loki did a whole bit about being erased from his own lore entry.
**LOKI:** It was a good bit, though.
**CAIN:** It's not sad. It's just the deal. I made my peace with the deal a long time before any of you were a lore entry.
**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** Do you resent the raven.
**CAIN:** Which raven.
**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** Any of them. All of them. The one you argued with, if that's a different guy from the one who told on you.
**CAIN:** No. The raven wasn't wrong to say what happened. It just wasn't the raven's story to end. That's the difference between being reported on and being sentenced. The report was accurate. Everything after the report was somebody else deciding what accurate was worth.
**TYLER:** *(to camera, or whatever the garage has instead of one)* We're Mid-Piano. The mark's still a mercy. Ask again later.
