Mid-Piano Presents: The State of Things

**TYLER:** Different kind of episode again. No sketch, no bit. The Unicorn asked for the floor.

**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** I did. Somebody has to say the quarter out loud instead of just shipping through it.

**DUCK:** Is this the "real talk" episode. I hate the real talk episode.

**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** It's the honest one. Different thing. Real talk implies I'm about to be disappointed in you specifically. This is bigger than you.

**DUCK:** Everything's bigger than me. I'm a duck.

**TYLER:** Go ahead.

**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** Started as twenty-four lines of business. AI-driven financial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing, sustainable textiles, quantum computing, ocean exploration, cultural preservation through digital technologies. A whole elevator pitch about forging a brighter future at the nexus of human ingenuity and technological advancement. That was the first commit. January.

**GARY:** What actually got built.

**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** Not textiles. Not quantum computing. Not the ocean. What actually got built is a card-RTS with a MOBA growing out of its side, a Minecraft server with a whole market-microstructure doctrine bolted onto it, a financial-signal pipeline that reads SEC filings faster than most humans want to, an authentication service every one of us trusts our lives to, and a five-bone skeleton format that gave Tyler his joints back. None of that was on the list. All of it is real.

**TYLER:** Some of it is more real than other parts of it. Say the quiet part.

**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** Fine. Today alone: the press releases page was quietly showing a six-month-old filing on a loop and calling it news — found the actual cause, it's fixed, it's live, I checked. The reboot took out two processes nobody had gotten around to putting under real supervision — also fixed, also live. REDGARDEN's shop had items with real mechanics and zero listed stats, which is exactly the kind of thing that looks like nothing's there until you go read the code and find out there's a passive that heals you at 25% HP. Documented. GOLDENBAND didn't have a README at all until an hour ago, and somebody had a rigged skeleton sitting there the whole time with no instructions for what to do with it.

**LOKI:** This is the part where you tell them everything's fixed now and it's all sunshine.

**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** No. This is the part where I tell them some things aren't. MoneyPrinter Turbo hasn't moved since May. TIPJAR is a wiki and a roadmap and zero lines of actual game code, and has been since March. SKULDMARK shipped a real format and then went quiet. Three brand-new repos — CarePyre, EXODUS, TTT — are stubs with a CLAUDE.md and a README and a promise of more direction later, and "later" hasn't arrived for any of them yet. That's not a failure. That's just what twenty-four lines of business actually looks like nine months in: some of them are a Minecraft server with real players on it right now, and some of them are a folder with a name in it.

**DUCK:** So which one am I. Bird or folder.

**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** You have zero bones and a working telekinesis kit in a live game with a 3v3 queue and a trained policy that beats a fixed heuristic 100% of the time in one training run and 75% in the harder one. You are extremely bird.

**DUCK:** I'll allow that.

**TYLER:** What's the actual thesis. You didn't ask for the floor to read a status report.

**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** The thesis is the list was never the plan. The plan was the thing underneath the list — Apple before mark-done, a backlog that never gets picked without being logged first, a session tag that rides on every commit whether it's convenient or not. That part hasn't drifted once, not across nine months, not across a box reboot, not across a day where forty different threads all landed in the same hour. The twenty-four lines were a guess at what we'd build. The discipline underneath them is why anything on the list that turned out to matter actually got built for real instead of staying a slide.

**GARY:** And the stuff that's still a folder?

**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** Still a folder. Honestly. Not everything gets picked up in the same season, and pretending otherwise in a blog post would be a worse thing to do than just saying it. We're not a folder-shaming operation. Some of these come alive in three weeks. Some of them are still a folder a year from now and that's fine too, as long as we're honest about which is which instead of narrating a highlight reel and calling it the whole company.

**TYLER:** That's the episode?

**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** That's the episode. Ship the real thing, say the true thing about it, next quarter.

**DUCK:** No outro bit?

**UNICORN (TEXT CARD):** I contain multitudes. This was one of them.
