State of the Ecosystem: The Duck Still Hasn't Moved

By Tyler · August 29, 2026

Transcript, unlabeled feed, the garage. Tyler brought a printout this time, which nobody else acknowledged. Recording starts mid-argument, as usual.

TYLER: — no, we're doing this one properly, I have an actual agenda. State of the ecosystem. Last one was a keynote, full blocking, THE FOUNDER alone on a stage. This one's just us, because apparently that's the format now.

THE DUCK: Demoted to podcast. Duly noted.

TYLER: It's not a demotion, it's a different show. Okay. Top of the list: PAPERCRAFT is real now. Not "NORTHSTAR only," not a stub — a whole game got built in about a day and a half, and today a real human being logged into it, over the actual internet, for the first time.

THE UNICORN: Define "real human being."

TYLER: The founder. On Windows. On 5G.

THE FROG: That's not a real human being, that's a stress test.

TYLER: It found real bugs, if that's what you're asking. The client flashed black and closed. Turned out the whole worldapi fetch runs before Winsock even gets initialized — real Windows error code, ten thousand and ninety-three, "you didn't call WSAStartup." Nobody's ever run this thing on real Windows before today, so nobody ever tripped over it before today.

THE GHOST: I've tripped over worse and said nothing.

TYLER: Sure. Then the firewall — the game server wasn't even running, then it was running but nobody could reach it, then reaching it worked but the client kept flashing "CONNECTION LOST" every few seconds because the timeout was tuned against localhost, which has never once dropped a packet in its life. Then that fix made it WORSE — the same flag that showed the reconnect screen also silenced your own movement keys, so you'd stop moving and have no idea why.

THE DUCK: A game where you stop being able to move is just my whole career, congratulations to them.

TYLER: We'll get to your career. Fixed now — input sends the whole time regardless, there's a little "weak connection" readout instead of the whole screen flashing, and the real disconnect only fires after twenty real seconds, not five. Eight releases in one sitting. Version zero-point-eight is out.

THE TREE: Was any of this tested before a real person touched it?

TYLER: Compiled clean on two platforms, twenty-seven automated tests, real UDP probes against a real throwaway server. Just never against a real Windows machine on real cell signal, because nobody had one plugged into this particular game before today. That's not a gap you close by trying harder, it's a gap you close by someone actually playing it.

THE UNICORN: So the bug wasn't a bug. It was a fact about the world that hadn't been asked yet.

TYLER: ...Sure, put it that way if you want. There's a real live server for it now too —
okemily.com
, real ports, real firewall rules, a whole download-and-double-click launcher so nobody has to touch a command line.

THE PIZZA: Does it have a map editor.

TYLER: It has a map editor.

THE PIZZA: Then I have no further questions.

TYLER: Real plot twist, though — opening that firewall for PAPERCRAFT was the FIRST real firewall rule ever added on that box. Which meant it turned the firewall on. Which meant it started blocking every OTHER game that had just been running wide open this whole time, no rule needed, because there was no enforcement to need a rule against.

THE DUCK: Say the part where it's my game.

TYLER: REDGARDEN's matchmaking went down. Same day. Nobody touched REDGARDEN. It just stopped being reachable because a completely different game asked for a lock on the front door and the door had never had a lock before.

THE FROG: I want it noted that consistency would have meant leaving the door unlocked forever.

TYLER: It's fixed. There's a real list now — every port, every game, every rule, written down so this doesn't happen the next time somebody locks a door on this monorepo.

THE GHOST: A haunted house with an itemized lock inventory. Growth.

TYLER: Moving on before we run out of tape. PARENA's own real Jupyter kernel exists now — it's called JEWEL, it shells out to the actual PARENA compiler per cell, so you can write the language in a notebook instead of a text file and a terminal. There's a whole editor being planned for PARENA itself too, S-expressions all the way down, codenamed SAND, not built yet, just named — badly, several times, before landing on SAND.

THE UNICORN: How many names did it go through.

TYLER: Three. IRONCLAD, then JEWEL — which collided with the actual Jupyter kernel also being called JEWEL, that's a real, separate, unrelated project that happens to share a name — then SAND.

THE DUCK: Nothing in this ecosystem is allowed to keep its first name. I respect that, actually.

TYLER: ECOWAR forked off of REDGARDEN too — full history, four hundred and forty-six commits carried over, own matchmaker, own sixteen-card system, first real mod to make actual decisions instead of just firing a trigger. And GOLDENBAND shipped its own animation format, the thing that's supposed to make your telekinesis grab look like an actual pull instead of a snap.

THE DUCK: Finally. It's been instant this whole time. People think I'm just placing objects with my mind, no windup, no follow-through, like a menu selection.

THE UNICORN: You ARE just placing objects with your mind.

THE DUCK: With STYLE, eventually, once the pipeline lands.

TYLER: Speaking of you specifically — I pulled the real hero leaderboard this morning, thirty heroes, real matches, and I have to ask on the record: are we going to talk about the standings.

THE DUCK: No.

TYLER: Hero one. Three hundred thirty-three real matches played. Hundred thirty-five wins. Forty and a half percent. Dead last of thirty. Same as last time we checked.

THE DUCK: Those numbers describe a body double.

THE FROG: They describe a very consistent hero, is what they describe. Forty percent, reliably, indefinitely. That's not failure, that's a load-bearing constant. WOTAN should be thanking you.

THE DUCK: I accept the frog's framing and reject everything else about this segment.

THE UNICORN: For what it's worth I'm not that far above you and I'm a sentient identity crisis with a kit.

THE DUCK: We are not the same.

TYLER: You're two spots apart.

THE DUCK: We are NOT the same.

TYLER: Okay — last: WEAKNIGHT_BEDROCK_RACERS is real too, its own login, its own real matchmaking queue, and there's a real line on record that it might grow into PAPERCRAFT someday, no promises, no merge, just a door left open. And a small pile of repos that are still just names on a shelf — TTT, EXODUS, CarePyre — nothing built yet, which I'm told is also a real status, not a failure to report one.

THE PIZZA: Some of us are also just names on a shelf and we don't get a paragraph about it.

TYLER: You're a pizza. You get a paragraph every time you talk.

THE PIZZA: I withdraw the complaint.

TYLER: That's the update. Clean builds first, then custody, then a duck refusing to update his own priors. Some things don't change ecosystem to ecosystem.

THE DUCK: I want a producer credit.

TYLER: You want a rematch.

THE DUCK: Those aren't mutually exclusive.
